robert hellmick 1978 - 1979 Fortieth president of the AAU. Helmick presided over AAU during the United States Congress adoption of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978. This act established the United States Olympic Committee and started the AAU’s shift from preparing athletes for international competition to a more grassroot, youth sport organization. Helmick also served as vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee and secretary of FINA. He competed in several Masters swimming meets and his primary sport was water polo.
