james e. sullivan 1908 - 1908 Ninth president of the AAU. He was one of the first founders of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1888 and inspirational leader of the organization for a quarter of a century. Served as its national secretary and treasurer until 1906 when he became president and was the first to serve three consecutive terms. Sullivan was a key figure in building successful U.S. Olympic teams from 1900 to 1912. He also served as U.S. President Taft’s special commissioner to the 1912 Olympic Games.
