HOME AAU PRESIDENTS

Harry MCmillan 1888 - 1890
1895 - 1897 First president and Fourth president of the AAU, also served on the Olympic Organizing Committee in 1904. The New York Athletic Club was almost alone in arranging strictly amateur track and field meets in the 1870’s and 1880’s beyond those held at colleges. McMillan’s leadership changed all that in 1888 when an overwhelming number of applications for membership convinced him that to go on with this plan would create an unwieldly organization, which could not administer competently. So in 1889, a year after the AAU was born, a “Reorganization Plan” was drawn. (Ref: All Sports Record Book- Page 1)
