gussie crawford 1988 - 1992 Forty-third president of the AAU. Crawford was elected the first female president of the AAU in its 100 plus year history in 1988. A mainstay of amateur sports for over 50 years, her involvement in the AAU began in the 1960’s. Crawford became national secretary for the AAU in the 1970’s. She was inducted into the AAU Hall of Fame in 1993. In recognition of her contributions to amateur sports, the AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2017 to honor those athletes whose efforts, both on and off their playing surface on the national or international stage, have paved the way for great change in amateur sports.
